Reject Rare Draft: which cards are rare?

We are voting on the following two issues: (straight from the email)

1) Do we allow rares printed before Exodus (meaning, rares without the
gold-colored expansion symbol)? If we do, then suddenly we have the
problem of determining whether some submitted cards are actually rare. If
not, then we exclude some (cool and horrible) rares from being in our
draft.

2) Do we allow Timeshifted (Purple) cards that were rare when originally
printed? Pro: These cards were once rare. Con: Purple cards just aren't
rare.

Vote away!

Yes to rares before Exodus, provided you can prove that they are rare. No to Time Spiral Time Shifted cards that weren't rare in their original set (i.e. Tribal Flames, Stupor, etc.). Verdoloth, Celestial Dawn, etc. are okay.

I think everyone will have pretty much the same opinions on this...

Yes to rares before exodus. The owner is responsible for verifying they are rare.

Yes to purples which were originally rare. No to purples which were not originally rare.

Another question: What about Unglued/Unhinged rares?

Yes, please, let's also vote about the Unglued/Unhinged rares! Consider that Q#3 :-P

Yes to black-icon rares.

Yes to purples that were originally rare. As long as no one's passing off half a dozen former commons and uncommons as rares, I don't really care if one or two cards slip past here.

No to Unglued/Unhinged rares. Some of them are really bomby, and do we really want games to be determined by someone playing an Ass Whupping on a card in the the next game over?

yes to the first two

yes old rares

yes purple originally rare

what about cards that are rare in one set, uncommon in another?

hmm unhinged...probably not? too...odd.

Ass Whupping would actually suck...it only targets silver-bordered permanents (i.e. other unhinged/unglued cards).

Anywho, I agree with the general conensus: Before Exodus is fine, just everyone do your own checking. Same with TSP Timeshifts.

In terms of cards that are rare in some sets and not in others: I would have to say only the gold-symboled ones should be allowed. It's a rare occurence (no pun intended) and this just makes it easier on all.

It seems that there's a bit of backwards reasoning here: we want to allow purple cards that are rare in other sets, but we don't want to allow non-timeshifted cards that are rare in other sets. I understand that purple cards are very "rare" but if that's the case, why can't we use purple cards that aren't rare in other sets?

I think I will vote to disallow any timeshifted cards (though I seem to be outvoted so far:-P).

I agree with allowing rares before Exodus. Please do your own checking. Use http://gatherer.wizards.com to see the rarity of cards you're considering. Please don't ask me to check for you;)

Another point: do we allow people to bring duplicates of cards? My initial inclination is no...

(Obviously, no more than 3 of any one card in the worst case...)

No duplicates! There are already going to be like seven flying carpets among us. Let's not make it fourteen.

I tried voting before but I don't think I pressed the sumbit button, so hear are my votes:

-No rares before Exodus (not that this vote will matter anymore)

-No to purples! How many rare timeshifted reject cards are there? Don't you want to keep these new purply cards?

-No Un-rares! I don't want to see some assclown bring one half of a BFM. (In the event that we could bring un-rares, that assclown would be me.)

Also, I agree that only rare editions of rares can be played with (no mirrodin lox warhammers). Why? Because otherwise that same assclown above would take Web to the draft. No Webs please, unless they are really old.

Okay, I'm closing the voting. Here are the results:

Yes, you may bring rare cards from before Exodus. Please check ahead of time that your cards are actually rare.

You may bring timeshifted "purple" cards which were originally printed as rares.

You may not bring Unhinged or Unglued rares.

You may not bring more than one copy of any one card.

Great! Bring your 45 rares with you on Sunday. We'll start the tournament at 1pm.
